Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Not Running For President

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is refuting rumors that he plans to run for the United States’ top political job.

When asked by BuzzFeed News in an e-mail if he planned to run for president, his response was straight to the point.

“No, I’m focused on building our community at Facebook and working on the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative,” he said, referencing the philanthropic foundation he started in 2015 with his wife Priscilla Chan, a pediatrician. Zuckerberg did not respond to BuzzFeed’s follow-up questions asking if he had “explicitly ruled out a run.”

Zuckerberg’s denial comes after weeks of rumors in the tech world that he was gearing up for a presidential bid. He announced, as part of his New Year’s resolution, he planned to meet with community leaders and average citizens in every U.S. state this year.

Not long after Zuck went public with his plan, Vanity Fair penned the headline: “Will Mark Zuckerberg Be Our Next President?”  As the publication pointed out, Facebook’s 2016 financial filings revealed Zuckerberg can run for office and still maintain control of the social networking firm.

He has apparently also eased up on the whole atheist thing and, when asked on Facebook over the holidays about being an atheist, he gave a much more moderate answer than he has in times past: “I was raised Jewish and then I went through a period where I questioned things, but now I believe religion is very important,” he wrote. By and large, most Americans want a leader who does believe in God, so it is possible his answer is taking that into consideration.

Another supposed indication of his political aspirations, is his hiring of Barrack Obama’s former campaign manager, David Plouffe, for the Chan Zuckerberg initiative. George W. Bush’s former campaign manager Ken Mehlman has also come on board as an advisor.

While Zuckerberg has been adamant he is not running for president, at least, not right now, it is entirely possible he may take a go at it in the future.
