Instagram Challenging Snapchat With Face Filters

Instagram is once again taking a page out of Snapchat’s book with the addition of Face Filters, a new feature that takes the traditional selfie up a notch.

The Facebook-owned company unveiled eight Face Filters — such as furry koala ears that move and swirling math equations — to start.

“Today, we’re introducing face filters in the camera, an easy way to turn an ordinary selfie into something fun and entertaining,” reads a company blog post. “Whether you’re sitting on the couch at home or you’re out and about, you can use face filters to express yourself and have playful conversations with friends.”

To view the new face filters, open the camera and tap the new face icon in the bottom right corner and then tap a filter to try it on.

“Take a photo or video using the front- or back-facing camera — they even work with Boomerang, so you can easily add an unexpected twist to what you share,” the blog post reads. “When you’re done recording, you can send it to your best friends through Instagram Direct or add it to your story.”

A number of creative tools in the camera are also rolling out as part of the update. Rewind, for instance, enables you to make videos that play in reverse.

Hashtag stickers are also available. Simply tap the sticker icon at the top right of your screen, choose a hashtag to customize and add it to your story. Anyone who is watching your story can tap the hashtag sticker or text to visit the hashtag page or view related posts.

An eraser brush is now available when using drawing tools, enabling you to remove color from an image or get rid of it completely.

The updates are available to both iOS and Android users.
