Instagram Closing in on 1B Users; Surpasses 700M Mark

Instagram continues to rack up new users at a rapid rate.

The photo-sharing app announced Wednesday that its membership base now sits at more than 700 million.

The Facebook-owned company is one of the fastest growing social media sites, collecting 200 million new users in less than one year, 100 million of which were added in the past four months.

“We’ve made it even easier for people across the globe to join the Instagram community, share their experiences and strengthen connections to their friends and passions,” Instagram said in a blog post. “With new features like stories, live video and disappearing messages in Direct, people now have more ways than ever to express themselves and feel closer to what matters to them. From all of us at Instagram, thank you.”

Part of Instagram’s massive growth in the past months is due to the popularity of its Stories feature, a tool that captures users’ daily photos and videos in a slideshow format.

Instagram, which launched in October of 2010, had just 30 million users when Facebook purchased the social start-up for $ 1 billion in cash and stock in April of 2012. By September of that year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Instagram’s user base had grown to 100 million.

By September of 2015, its user base was up to 400 million and nine months later hit the half a billion mark.

Instagram still has quite a way to go to catch up with Facebook’s user base of 1.8 billion and Messenger’s one billion users, but it already far surpasses Twitter, which sits at just 328 million users and Snapchat with a user base of 375 million.
