Instagram is launching a new feature this week to allow its users to save posts into special collections.
The Facebook-owned social image site’s latest update puts it into competition with virtual pin-up board Pinterest which has long enabled its members to compile collections.
Still, anyone who likes to keep their images organized is unlikely to care if the latest Instagram update is copying a Pinterest functionality. The handy new tool offers a more customized experience on the platform.
“Whether you want to plan your next day trip, revisit your favorite artists’ illustrations or always have some animal videos on hand, collections can help you keep track of the posts you want to remember,” Instagram said in a blog post.
“You can find your collections on the saved posts tab on your profile. Just like all saved posts, your collections are private — only you can see them.”
To make use of the new tool, simply tap and hold the bookmark icon underneath any post to save it to the collection of your choice.
You can create and name a new collection when saving a post, or the image can be added to one you already have in place. Another option is to create a collection out of posts you already have saved. To name a collection, tap the plus icon in the top right corner and then select the saved posts you wish to add.
Instagram private collections is rolling out to iOS and Android users as part of Instagram version 10.16.
