Uber, Daimler Team Up on Self-Driving Car Project

Uber is joining forces with Daimler to bring self-driving vehicles to its ridesharing network.

The companies today announced their plan to introduce and operate their own self-driving cars, although no date was given for when the vehicles will be ready to hit city streets.

CEO Travis Kalanick said auto manufacturers such as Daimler are key to its plan to implement self-driving technology to reduce traffic while increasing the reliability and safety of the vehicles on the road.

UberAlthough Uber has already invested in autonomous vehicles, which are currently on the road in Pittsburgh, where its Advanced Technologies Center (ATC) is located, Kalanick admitted that the company simply cannot go it alone.

“Auto manufacturers like Daimler are crucial to our strategy because Uber has no experience making cars—and in fact, making cars is really hard. This became very clear to me after I visited an auto manufacturing plant and saw how much effort goes into designing, testing and building cars,” he wrote in a blog post.

“That’s why instead of building them ourselves, we want to partner with the best auto manufacturers in the world. We can combine Uber’s global ridesharing network with the world-class vehicles of companies like Daimler, so that Uber riders can have a great experience getting around their cities.”

Uber, in a blog post earlier this year, said it is focused on getting autonomous technology right and “ensuring it’s safe for everyone on the road — pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers.”

“By opening up the Uber platform to Daimler, we can get to the future faster than going it alone,” Kalanick added. “It’s a future in which our cities and roads will be safer, cleaner and more accessible, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s next.”
